Train Examiner & Wagon Maintainer

About the role

Gemco Rail is seeking an experienced Train Examiner / Wagon Maintainer to join its Altona, VIC workshop on a full‑time basis. You will be responsible for inspecting, maintaining and ensuring the safety of rolling stock in line with Australian railway standards and company protocols.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct arrival and departure roll‑by examinations to verify rolling stock integrity.
• Perform comprehensive mechanical inspections to meet Railways of Australia engineering standards.
• Complete all required documentation and certifications accurately and legibly.
• Coordinate with transport companies and shunting contractors via radio during marshalling and depot operations.
• Communicate inspection results to operations personnel and workshop supervisors.
• Maintain security of the workshop, vehicles and equipment.
• Assist with repairs and servicing of company and client rolling stock as directed.

Required profile

• Trade qualification or Railway Examiners Certificate.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, shifts and weekends.
• Experience with rolling stock or railway equipment.
• Exposure to hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
• Sound knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and general engineering principles.
• Railway track access/rail awareness certificate.
• Fit to perform Rail Safety Worker duties at Category 2 level.
