Trade Control Specialist

About the role

Austal Defence Australia (ADA) is looking for a Trade Control Specialist based in Fremantle, WA, with remote locations considered on a case-by-case basis. The role ensures that an appropriate system for export control risk, oversight and management is maintained, keeping the company compliant with the Australian Defence Trade Controls Act, the International Traffic in Arms Regulations and other applicable export controls.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain the Export Control Compliance framework and the export control management systems, including the authorisation database, transactions register and authorised personnel lists.
• Develop and maintain the export control training program and stay updated on emerging security threats and technologies.
• Identify, assess and mitigate export control risks across the organisation and conduct regular audits and assessments.
• Lead incident response: develop and run plans for export control breaches, respond to incidents and report to regulators.
• Work with cross-functional teams (ICT, P&C, legal, supply chain, facilities) and train employees on export control best practice.
• Engage with government and industry export control stakeholders and communicate risks and strategy to senior management.

Required profile

• NV1 AGSVA (Australian Government Security Vetting Agency) personnel clearance.
• Minimum 8 years' experience in a similar role, working autonomously and influencing senior stakeholders.
• Minimum 8 years' experience in the defence industry.
• Demonstrated experience managing personnel, facilities, information and cyber security up to and including PROTECTED level.
• Experience lifting export control measures to maintain and improve the risk posture, leading incident investigations and applying lessons learned.
• Enterprise risk management experience in line with ISO 31000 and experience influencing stakeholders and cultural change on export controls.

Required skills

• Comprehension of the Defence Trade Controls Act, ITAR, EAR, FMS and EU regulatory frameworks.
• Program environment experience.
