Systems Engineer (On-Prem and Azure) - 6-Month Contract

About the role

A well-established global organisation is looking for an experienced Systems Administrator on an initial 6-month contract, based in Sydney and working onsite. The role takes ownership of the server infrastructure (on-premises and Azure) and brings hands-on expertise to lift the whole team. The position is advertised by a consultant, Jasmin Dearing, Principal Consultant for IT Security and IT Infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Administer and support Windows Server environments on-premises and in Azure, including Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS/DHCP, file and certificate services, patching, hardening and lifecycle management.
• Provision, configure and troubleshoot Azure infrastructure such as Virtual Machines, storage, networking (VNets, NSGs, VPN, Load Balancers, Application Gateways) and Microsoft Entra ID / RBAC.
• Maintain monitoring, logging and alerting with Azure Monitor and Log Analytics.
• Administer Linux servers (RHEL, Ubuntu or equivalent), managing services, updates, storage, users, networking and performance.
• Configure, monitor and maintain Veeam Backup & Replication, including job monitoring, restore validation, recovery testing and DR documentation.
• Troubleshoot server, authentication, storage and availability issues, applying production-focused change control and clear handover documentation.

Required profile

• Comfortable working independently as a contractor against defined tasks, milestones and priorities.
• Quick to get across a new environment, support model and business risks.
• Clear communicator who reports progress, blockers, findings and remediation recommendations.
• Professional and collaborative with internal IT teams, stakeholders and vendors/MSPs.
• Australian citizenship or permanent residency required.

Required skills

• Proven experience in hybrid on-premises and Azure environments, ideally in business-critical settings.
• Hands-on experience with backup remediation, restore validation, DR testing or infrastructure modernisation projects.
• Track record of producing runbooks, operational procedures and handover documentation.
