Strategic Buyer - Manufacturing

About the role

A well-established manufacturing organisation, which has recently undergone significant change and is now seeing market activity pick up, is looking for a Strategic Buyer in Melbourne. The role plays a key part in improving the purchasing function by bringing greater structure, forward planning and commercial discipline to a currently highly manual and reactive operation.

Key responsibilities

• Proactively manage procurement, inventory and supplier activities across the manufacturing operation
• Ensure materials and components are available in line with production requirements
• Improve supplier performance, inventory management and cost control
• Support the implementation of SAP and broader process improvements
• Take ownership of improvement initiatives
• Work closely with Production, Stores and Engineering to identify and resolve supply issues before they affect production

Required profile

• Purchasing or procurement experience in a complex industrial manufacturing environment
• Strong experience in supplier management, inventory management, cost control and expediting
• Heavy manufacturing experience highly desirable, with a strong understanding of manufacturing processes
• Ability to plan forward rather than operate purely reactively
• Experience supporting the implementation or improvement of ERP/MRP systems is beneficial

Required skills

• Technical understanding, including interpreting technical drawings
• Understanding of the materials, components and assemblies being purchased
• Comfortable managing supplier orders and identifying potential delays or discrepancies
