Staff Frontend Engineer, Editing Performance

About the role

Canva is looking for a Staff Frontend Engineer to join its Editing Performance team, which rebuilds foundational parts of the Canva editor architecture. The role is based in Sydney and is hybrid, with the option to work remotely and on the Sydney campus. The work focuses on keeping the editor fast, smooth and reliable across devices, networks and complex designs.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and deploy software solutions, partnering with engineering leads, designers and product managers.
• Work primarily in TypeScript, with opportunities in React Native and native development.
• Drive measurable performance improvements using performance data and instrumentation.
• Build tools, frameworks and libraries that help other engineers create performant features.
• Take ownership of complex technical problems and share technical knowledge across teams.

Required profile

• Strong commercial software engineering experience on complex, large-scale applications, SDKs or APIs.
• Deep TypeScript experience and comfort with large, long-lived codebases.
• Experience contributing to architecture decisions and solving complex engineering problems.
• Comfortable with performance data, instrumenting metrics and interpreting dashboards.
• Clear communication and effective collaboration.

Required skills

• TypeScript; React Native and native development are opportunities.
• Computer science fundamentals: asynchronous programming, data structures, solution design, architecture and design patterns.
• Browser rendering, event handling, WebWorkers or WebGL/WebGPU are a strong plus; native rendering pipelines or JavaScript engine internals are a bonus.
