Solicitor – Government Legal Team

About the role

The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Solicitor to join its fast‑moving legal team. You will help shape legal decisions across government and public services, working on tribunal and enforcement matters that affect Victorians.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and support on regulatory and enforcement matters.
• Manage tribunal cases, internal reviews and complex legal issues affecting government operations.
• Prepare clear legal briefings and advice for ministers, executives and business areas.
• Oversee VCAT matters, act as instructing solicitor and appear before tribunals as required.
• Conduct sensitive prosecutions on behalf of the department.
• Build productive relationships while managing competing priorities.

Required profile

• Admission to practice as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of Victoria.
• At least two years of post‑admission experience.
• Strong advocacy skills across courts and tribunals.
• Sound knowledge of administrative law and statutory interpretation.
• Experience working in a government regulatory setting.
• Excellent communication, problem‑solving and teamwork abilities.

• Fixed‑term, full‑time contract for 2 years.
• Salary range $100,894 – $114,476 per year plus superannuation.
