Sessional Ombudsman – Banking & Finance

About the role

AFCA is seeking experienced senior lawyers to serve as Sessional Ombudsmen on a per‑engagement basis, providing independent, fair decisions on complex banking and finance disputes. This Board‑appointed role runs for a three‑year term and can be performed fully remotely, offering flexibility for seasoned professionals.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with complex and significant disputes within banking and finance, applying sound legal judgement.
• Collaborate with experienced Ombudsmen, lawyers and industry experts using AFCA’s research and dispute‑resolution framework.
• Deliver independent, fair and balanced decisions that impact consumers, small businesses and the financial services sector.

Required profile

• Accomplished senior lawyers, former partners, barristers or executive legal leaders with deep banking and finance expertise.
• Proven track record navigating banking regulation, codes of practice, contract law, insolvency, securities, lending and dispute resolution.
• Ability to work flexibly on a per‑engagement basis, communicate with influence and maintain the highest standards of integrity and impartiality.

Required skills

• Legal qualifications with substantial senior‑level experience in banking and finance, tribunals, regulators or external dispute‑resolution schemes.
• Strong analytical skills for complex legal issues and sound judgement.
