Senior System Administrator

About the role

Our Queensland Government client is looking for an experienced System Administrator to join the Application Hosting Windows team. You will be responsible for supporting and enhancing Windows, SQL and web server platforms that underpin critical departmental applications, while ensuring stability, security and performance across on-premise and cloud environments.

Key responsibilities

• Administer, configure, monitor and support Windows Server, SQL Server (2012-2025) and IIS environments.
• Manage Microsoft Operations and Configuration Manager for alerting, monitoring, deployments and patching.
• Maintain Active Directory, Group Policy, security groups and identity management.
• Support Azure and AWS infrastructures, including Azure SQL PaaS, SQL Managed Instance, EC2 and virtual machines.
• Monitor system health, ensure platform stability, reliability and performance.
• Provide operational support and troubleshoot infrastructure issues.
• Develop and maintain PowerShell scripts, Azure Runbooks, Terraform code and GitHub Actions for automation.
• Produce and keep up-to-date system, operational and procedural documentation.
• Collaborate with internal teams to deliver reliable infrastructure services.
• For senior candidates: lead upgrades, migrations and technology implementation projects; produce design documentation; assess emerging technologies; mentor team members.

Required profile

• Strong experience administering Microsoft Windows Server environments.
• Hands-on experience with SQL Server (2012-2025) and IIS.
• Experience managing Azure and/or AWS infrastructure.
• Proficient PowerShell scripting with automation, functions and error handling.
• Familiarity with GitHub for version control and script management.
• Experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical and documentation skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Ability to manage competing priorities and work both independently and within a team.
