Senior Secondary & Protection Engineer

About the role

KBR is looking for an experienced Senior Secondary and Protection Design Engineer to join its growing national Power team in Melbourne. The role involves delivering complex secondary and protection designs for substations and HV networks, working both independently and in a multidisciplinary team, and collaborating with colleagues across Australia.

Key responsibilities

• Lead HV substation secondary design, including protection, control, SCADA and AC/DC systems (1kV to 132kV+).
• Carry out analytical power system studies: protection coordination, load flow, short-circuit analysis and arc flash hazard assessments.
• Develop protection system drawings, SLDs, functional schematics, wiring diagrams and control logic.
• Calculate CT/VT sizing and burden requirements, prepare protection relay settings and detailed settings reports, and select relays and write technical specifications.
• Work with Primary, SCADA, E&B and project delivery teams to produce integrated substation designs, and coordinate with clients, utilities, contractors and suppliers.
• Mentor and train junior engineers, support proposals and bids, lead design checking, QA and standards compliance, and identify new client opportunities.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Electrical Engineering accredited by the Washington Accord (or equivalent recognised by Engineers Australia).
• Chartered Engineer (CPEng/RPEQ/RPEV) or ability to attain it.
• Proven consulting/design experience with Transport clients and proven experience leading teams on complex projects.
• Experience with DNSPs/TNSPs is highly desirable.

Required skills

• Protection and control design, AC/DC auxiliary systems, SCADA and secondary systems studies.
• MTM accreditation (designer/checker) or ability to obtain it within 6 months.
• Familiarity with protection relays such as SEL, GE, ABB and Schneider.
• Strong communication, project management and client-facing skills.
