Senior Crown Prosecutor - Ipswich

About the role

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is offering three permanent, flexible full-time Senior Crown Prosecutor positions (PO6) in a newly established legal chamber in the Ipswich region. The ODPP represents the State in prosecuting criminal matters across Queensland's courts, including the High Court of Australia and the Supreme Court.

Key responsibilities

• Appear as leading counsel in criminal proceedings, including complex superior court trials
• Provide specialist, expert advice to the Director of Public Prosecutions on criminal law and evidence
• Initiate, vary and discontinue serious criminal charges without supervision
• Identify and address the needs of victims of crime
• Communicate persuasively with judges, counsel, solicitors, police officers, witnesses, victims and court officials
• Motivate and contribute to the professional development and supervision of Crown Prosecutors, legal officers and support staff
• Take part in activities aimed at improving ODPP practices

Required profile

• Comprehensive knowledge of Queensland criminal law and practice, including preparing and conducting complex criminal hearings, trials, sentences and appeals in superior courts
• Demonstrated understanding of emerging issues affecting the criminal justice system
• Ability to identify and address the needs of victims of crime
• Strong ethics, independence, fairness and integrity, with good judgment and decision-making skills
• Leadership skills, including mentoring and building the capability of legal and support staff
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills with the judiciary, defence counsel, police and the community
• Active interest in improving work practices
• Admitted as a Legal Practitioner in a State or Territory of Australia (admission date required)
