Senior Business Writer, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age

About the role

Nine, Australia's largest locally owned media company, is looking for a Senior Business Writer for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. Reporting to the Business Editor as part of the National Business team, the role drives agenda-setting business and consumer coverage through daily scoops, deep-dive features and sharp analysis. It can be based in the Sydney or Melbourne office and requires some weekend work.

Key responsibilities

• Break major original business and consumer news stories across print and digital platforms.
• Produce features and analysis on corporate, economic and social trends.
• Cultivate and maintain a network of high-level industry sources.
• Translate complex financial data into clear, engaging narratives.
• Collaborate with photo, audiovisual and cross-masthead newsroom teams.
• Ensure published content meets high ethical standards and legal compliance.
• Present stories on camera for videos, podcasts and social media as required.

Required profile

• Significant experience in business reporting with a strong track record of breaking news.
• Deep knowledge of the Australian corporate landscape and financial information.
• First-rate news judgment and the ability to turn complex topics into clear stories.
• Collaborative mindset with experience across multi-platform teams.
• Right to lawfully work and live in Australia.
