Senior Associate – Civil Litigation (Medical Defence)

About the role

Avant Law, Australia’s largest specialist medical defence law firm, is seeking a Senior Associate to join its civil litigation team in Melbourne. The role offers a permanent full‑time position with a hybrid work arrangement and focuses on defending medical practitioners without daily billable targets.

Key responsibilities

• Independently manage and supervise a diverse civil litigation file load of varying complexity, meeting KPIs and billing targets.
• Deliver sustainable, timely, and efficient legal services to achieve the best outcomes for members, reduce cycle times, ensure accurate reserves and minimise external legal costs.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary legal qualifications and an unsupervised practising certificate as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria and the High Court of Australia.
• Post‑admission experience (ideally 6‑10 years) in defendant medical litigation, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
• High level of prioritisation, time‑management and self‑management, plus the ability to mentor junior team members.

Required skills

• Good computer literacy and competency to work in an electronic document management environment.
