Senior AI Engineer (Mine Intelligence)

About the role

Fortescue is building an AI delivery team in its Perth CBD office, reporting to the Principal AI Delivery Lead, to deliver generative AI systems that embed AI at the heart of its mine control capability. The role suits experienced individual contributors who work autonomously, and welcomes candidates from computer science, data science or engineering backgrounds; experience in mine control and mining operations is valued but not required.

The roster is Monday to Friday, and the work is based in Perth.

Key responsibilities

• Own the design, build, deployment and support of agentic AI systems combining LLM reasoning, predictive models, domain-focused algorithms and operational tools across the product lifecycle.
• Build evaluation, testing and observability frameworks to ensure AI reasoning quality, system reliability and operational performance in production.
• Help identify, quantify and validate efficiency gains using data from a range of sources.
• Work with domain SMEs and users to shape technical requirements, and with front-line and operational support teams to test, validate and refine models.
• Maintain development backlogs and collaborate with cross-functional teams to prioritise work.
• Contribute to community development through technical engagement and leadership on AI engineering.

Required profile

• Five or more years of experience, including at least two years hands-on designing and deploying generative AI systems, including tool calls, integration and orchestration.
• Tertiary qualification in engineering, computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience developing production AI systems.
• Experience in multi-disciplinary teams, particularly business and technology.
• Ability to turn complex data sources and technical issues into requirements.
• Experience in mining operations or mine control is well regarded.

Required skills

• Data science methods for data-driven process discovery are well regarded.
• Software engineering, including system architecture, API development, automated testing and production deployment, is well regarded.
