Senior Adviser Communities & Social Performance

About the role

Rio Tinto is looking for a Senior Adviser Communities & Social Performance (CSP) to join its Gladstone CSP team, supporting operations across Boyne Smelters Limited (BSL), Yarwun and Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL). Reporting to the Manager Communities & Social Performance, the role strengthens relationships between the operations and the communities in which they live and work. It is a hands-on position working with operational leaders, Traditional Owners, community organisations, government, industry and other stakeholders, and is a permanent, full-time opportunity based in Gladstone.

Key responsibilities

• Advise and support leaders on CSP matters, stakeholder engagement, community issues, risks and opportunities
• Build and maintain relationships with Traditional Owners, community organisations, government, industry groups and other key stakeholders
• Support the implementation of the Gladstone CSP strategy, annual plans, initiatives and programs across BSL, Yarwun and QAL
• Plan and deliver stakeholder and community engagement activities, making sure feedback and emerging issues are understood
• Support community partnerships, social investment initiatives, sponsorships, agreements and commitments
• Identify emerging social performance risks and opportunities and advise on business decisions
• Coordinate community programs and support the management and resolution of stakeholder concerns and grievances in line with legal requirements, company policies and commitments
• Contribute to improving CSP processes, procedures, systems and ways of working, and monitor activities and outcomes for reporting
• Work with Operations, Projects, HSEC, Government Relations, People Experience and other functions, and represent Rio Tinto at community events, stakeholder meetings and industry forums

Required profile

• Experience in Communities & Social Performance, stakeholder engagement, community relations, government relations, community development or a related discipline
• Experience developing and delivering stakeholder engagement, community or social performance programs
• Experience coordinating internal governance, assurance and reporting in line with the CSP Standard
• Tertiary qualification in social sciences, community development, communications, public policy, environmental management or a related discipline (highly regarded)
• Experience in resources, heavy industry, energy, infrastructure or another complex operational environment (highly regarded)

• Communication, influencing and interpersonal skills, able to represent the organisation in community forums
• Sound judgement, independent work and ability to manage competing priorities
• Understanding of social performance principles and cultural awareness
