Science Technician - Invasive Plants and Animals

About the role

The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Queensland is recruiting a Science Technician for its Invasive Plants and Animals Science team. The role supports a biological control program that controls invasive and restricted weeds in Queensland, protecting production and the natural environment. The work covers laboratory, quarantine, field-based and scientific technical tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Perform scientific tasks according to standard operating procedures, protocols or methodologies to generate valid data and meet quality standards, laboratory accreditations, health and safety and legislative requirements.
• Support host testing of biological control agents on a range of plant species to check whether the agent is specific to the host and poses low economic and environmental risk.
• Carry out field observations and surveys to quantify the environmental impacts of weeds and biological control agents.
• Manage own work priorities so that tasks are completed efficiently and meet project and team aims.
• Contribute positively to teamwork and guide new or inexperienced colleagues.

Required profile

• Australian Diploma or Advanced Diploma in a relevant field, or equivalent.
• Current Class C driver's licence.
• Physical ability to do field work in remote areas that are often hot and humid, and to drive for long periods.
• Willingness to travel to other locations and do fieldwork across Queensland, including overnight stays.
