Principal Legal Officer

About the role

The Department of Justice is seeking a Principal Legal Officer to lead legislative and policy initiatives within Queensland's criminal law and justice system. This senior role will influence law reform, support the operation of the justice portfolio, and work closely with senior stakeholders, including the Minister and Parliament.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver and lead complex legislative and policy projects related to criminal law, sentencing, criminal procedure, organised crime, and drug misuse.
• Research, draft, and oversee high‑level documents for diverse audiences, ensuring clarity for parliamentary and ministerial review.
• Represent the department as a witness in Parliamentary Committee hearings on portfolio bills.
• Supervise and mentor team members, fostering collaboration and professional development.
• Analyse, develop, and evaluate a range of policy and legislative options within a project‑management framework.
• Navigate ambiguity, influence change, and deliver outcomes despite resistance or setbacks.

Required profile

• Demonstrated deep understanding of emerging trends in criminal law and criminal justice policy and their impact on government and community.
• Proven ability to lead analysis, development, and evaluation of complex policy and legislative options.
• Strong capability to manage ambiguity, drive change, and achieve results.
• Excellent oral and written communication and negotiation skills.
• Ability to work independently or collaboratively within a team environment.
