Principal Highways Engineer

About the role

The Principal Highways Engineer will act as a senior technical advisor, leading multidisciplinary design teams on major highway and infrastructure projects for Main Roads WA. This role combines technical expertise with client‑facing responsibilities to deliver high‑quality, cost‑effective solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialized technical input and guidance on studies and designs within the highway domain.
• Develop and standardise study and design procedures to ensure consistent, high‑quality outputs.
• Prepare project proposals, tenders and technical specifications for Main Roads Panel and major projects.
• Conduct quality‑control reviews of design calculations and drawings.
• Coordinate interdisciplinary project teams and participate in design reviews.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• 15+ years of experience in highway and major infrastructure design.
• Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status with Engineers Australia.
• Proven experience leading multidisciplinary design teams in a consultancy environment.
• Strong commercial awareness and client‑facing capability.

Required skills

• Civil engineering design principles for highways.
• Structural engineering knowledge.
• Familiarity with Main Roads WA standards and specifications.
• Technical specification development and quality‑control review.
