Principal Engineer – Rail & Metro

About the role

SMEC is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead technical design and delivery on major rail and metro projects in Brisbane. The role sits within a collaborative, flexible environment and works closely with multidisciplinary specialists to create sustainable infrastructure solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Provide leadership and coordinate project deliverables across rail design and construction teams.
• Deliver expert technical advice, ensuring analyses and designs meet client standards and SMEC quality requirements.
• Manage project schedules, budgets and stakeholder communications to achieve timely delivery.
• Contribute to commercial success through business development and bid preparation.

Required profile

• Minimum 15 years of experience in rail infrastructure project or design management.
• Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
• Professional registration (CPEng or RPEQ) is essential.
• Proven track record of leading multiple concurrent projects and delivering design packages.
• Strong consulting, client‑management and interpersonal skills in a multicultural setting.
