Job description

About the role

Journey Beyond's Outback Spirit Tours is seeking an experienced Nature Guide for Murwangi Safari Camp in the heart of Arnhem Land. Accessible only by Outback Spirit aircraft or 4WD, Murwangi offers a remote, immersive experience where you lead land-based 4WD tours in custom safari vehicles alongside local Yolngu guides, including Traditional Owners from the nearby community of Ramingining. Tours run every second day, with alternate days spent supporting the wider camp team.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging, informative and professional land-based nature experiences near Murwangi.
  • Work closely and respectfully with Yolngu guides and Traditional Owners, complementing their cultural storytelling with knowledge of the Top End's flora, fauna, ecology, geology and natural history.
  • Create warm guest interactions, answering questions and adapting your delivery to different audiences.
  • Safely operate custom safari vehicles across remote terrain, transporting guests and guides between Murwangi, Ramingining and tour locations.
  • Maintain a strong focus on safety, risk awareness and emergency response, and keep vehicles and equipment clean and ready.
  • On non-guiding days, support camp operations such as maintenance, groundskeeping, logistics, housekeeping and food and beverage service.

Required profile

  • Knowledgeable, engaging guide with a genuine passion for the Top End's landscapes and ecosystems.
  • Strong cultural awareness and respect, recognising that the experience centres on Yolngu culture, stories and connection to Country.
  • Adaptable, hands-on and comfortable in a remote environment within a small, close-knit team.
  • Ideal candidates have experience guiding nature-based tours, preferably in the Top End or another remote Australian setting.

Required skills

  • Strong knowledge of Australian flora, fauna, ecology and natural history.
  • Understanding of Yolngu culture and ability to build respectful, collaborative relationships with Yolngu people and Traditional Owners.
  • Excellent communication and interpretation skills, able to engage groups and field guest questions professionally.
  • Ability to absorb local knowledge and language and support its interpretation for guests.
  • Strong safety mindset and confidence driving 4WD in remote areas.
  • Willingness to work across camp operations, including food and beverage service, housekeeping and general maintenance.

The 2026 season ends in late September, so there is an opportunity to join for training and familiarisation before the season closes, then return for the full 2027 season starting in April. Applications are open to experienced guides who can join for the 2027 season only.
