Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

The client designs and manufactures bespoke heavy‑vehicle equipment and is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their Melbourne team on a permanent basis. The role involves creating and refining 3D models, producing detailed drawings, and supporting the full design lifecycle from concept to production.

Key responsibilities

• Use 3D CAD to develop concepts, models and technical drawings for heavy‑vehicle components.
• Design fabricated parts, sheet‑metal and structural‑steel assemblies.
• Produce detailed engineering and manufacturing drawings and maintain BOMs.
• Collaborate closely with manufacturing, fabrication teams and external suppliers.
• Support prototype builds, testing and final assembly, and verify designs before manufacture.

Required profile

• Minimum 2 years of experience in mechanical design engineering.
• Previous work designing parts for heavy vehicles, trucks, trailers or similar equipment.
• Strong practical, hands‑on approach and ability to manage multiple projects to deadlines.
• Experience working with manufacturing and fabrication teams.

Required skills

• Proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor or similar).
• Design of sheet‑metal components and structural‑steel parts.
• Creation and maintenance of Bills of Materials (BOMs).
• Production of detailed engineering and manufacturing drawings.
