About the role
The Department of Environment, Tourism and Sport (DETSI) is seeking a Manager to lead the Waste Policy and Legislation team within the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. This role will drive the implementation of Queensland’s Waste Strategy, supporting reduced landfill, increased recycling and new industry opportunities.
Key responsibilities
- Lead stakeholder engagement and consultation with industry, community groups and government agencies.
- Develop policy initiatives, guidance material, legislative amendments and policy analysis to support the Waste Strategy.
- Design, evaluate and manage co‑funded projects and strategic partnerships targeting priority waste streams such as plastics, organics, batteries and tyres.
- Oversee product stewardship schemes and assess their performance against legislative obligations.
- Prepare high‑quality briefing materials for senior executives, the Director‑General and the Minister, including cabinet submissions.
- Represent the department in technical and jurisdictional working groups and advocate for national harmonisation of waste reform policy.
Required profile
- Significant experience in industry and regulatory policy, either in government or the private sector.
- Proven ability to lead a team and manage complex stakeholder relationships.
- Strong understanding of waste management, recycling initiatives and legislative processes.
- Willingness to travel, including occasional overnight stays.
