Legal Officer – PO3 (Public Prosecutions)

About the role

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is seeking a permanent PO3 Legal Officer to join its Toowoomba Chambers. This role offers the chance to contribute to Queensland’s justice system by preparing and presenting complex criminal cases.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare prosecution matters and appeal submissions with professionalism and timeliness.
• Build and maintain relationships with defence counsel, police, victims, witnesses and other stakeholders.
• Represent the Director in court proceedings, including bail applications, sentencing, committal hearings and appeals in Magistrates and higher courts.
• Collaborate with complainants and families, particularly in sensitive sexual or violent offence cases.
• Lead, supervise and motivate legal support staff to achieve high performance.
• Contribute to initiatives that improve work practices and organisational efficiency.

Required profile

• Admitted as a Legal Practitioner in an Australian State or Territory (admission date required).
• Demonstrated ability to apply legal principles and draft legal documents.
• Strong advocacy skills in Magistrates and/or higher courts.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for consulting, negotiating and collaborating with diverse stakeholders.
• Capacity to mentor and guide legal and support staff while understanding victim needs.
• Commitment to the highest standards of professional competence and ethical conduct.
