Legal Officer – PO3 (Permanent) – Toowoomba

About the role

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is seeking a permanent PO3 Legal Officer to join its Toowoomba Chambers. This role offers the chance to work on complex criminal prosecutions and contribute to Queensland’s justice system.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare prosecution matters and appeal submissions with professionalism and timeliness.
• Build and maintain relationships with defence counsel, solicitors, police officers, victims and witnesses.
• Represent the Director in court proceedings, including bail applications, sentencing, committal hearings and appeals in Magistrates and higher courts.
• Collaborate with complainants and their families, particularly in sensitive sexual or violent offence cases.
• Lead, supervise and motivate legal support staff to achieve high performance.
• Contribute to initiatives that improve work practices and organisational efficiency.

Required profile

• Admission as a Legal Practitioner in an Australian State or Territory.
• Proficiency in applying legal principles, drafting legal documents and strong advocacy skills.
• Outstanding interpersonal and communication abilities for effective stakeholder engagement.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor, guide and empower legal and support staff.
• Understanding of victims’ needs and a commitment to the highest professional and ethical standards.
