Hospital Medical Officer – Emergency Medicine Pathway (PGY3+)

About the role

The Royal Melbourne Hospital is seeking a Hospital Medical Officer (HMO) to join its Emergency Medicine pathway. This 12‑month fixed‑term position starts on 1 February 2027 and is designed for doctors at PGY3 level or higher who wish to develop a career in emergency medicine.

Key responsibilities

• Provide acute medical care in the Royal Melbourne Hospital Emergency Department for six months.
• Complete a three‑month rotation in either Wimmera Emergency Department, Psychiatry, or General Medicine.
• Undertake three months of relieving duties across the hospital network.
• Participate in clinical teaching, audit projects, and quality‑improvement activities.
• Prepare for and sit emergency medicine examinations with hospital support.

Required profile

• Current General Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) or eligibility for Provisional Registration via the Competent Authority Pathway.
• At least 24 months of clinical experience, with a minimum of 12 months in the Australian health system or an AHPRA‑recognised overseas system.
• Strong interest in pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine.
• Eligibility for registration in Australia for overseas doctors through the Competent Authority Pathway.

Required skills

• Clinical assessment and management of emergency presentations.
