Grief Support Counsellor

About the role

Anglicare Sydney is looking for a Grief Support Counsellor to work alongside its Residential Aged Care clinical teams, Chaplains and Pastoral Carers. You will provide specialist grief and bereavement support to residents and their families, help them understand and navigate the grieving process, and strengthen their resilience. You will also support staff in understanding their own vulnerability when working with grief and loss.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialist grief and bereavement counselling and support to residents and their families, advocating for them and acknowledging their individual grieving process.
• Develop individual case plans with clear, achievable outcomes.
• Educate and support Residential Aged Care employees on grief, vulnerability and self-care.
• Identify complex grief and set up external referral pathways to specialist support.
• Develop resources that raise awareness of grief and bereavement support across Residential Aged Care homes.
• Maintain accurate client documentation and statistics using evidence-based tools.
• Contribute to continuous improvement through professional development, policies and procedures.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work or Counselling.
• Membership of a PACFA-registered organisation, AASW, APS or similar professional body.
• Training and clinical experience in grief and bereavement counselling, plus previous assessment and counselling experience.
• Awareness of the needs of people living with dementia and their families.
• Current NSW driver's licence and ability to meet probity requirements, including a Police Check and Working with Children Check.

Required skills

• Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to stay calm with distressed people, build rapport and work with multidisciplinary teams.
