Gardener

About the role

The Shire of Menzies is looking for a full-time Gardener to look after the gardens, lawns and green spaces of the Menzies townsite. The role reports to the Works Foreman and, when required, to the Works Supervisor, and contributes to a welcoming environment for tourists and community members. It is advertised under the Municipal Employees (Western Australia) Award.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, cultivate and maintain gardens, lawns and other green spaces in the townsite
• Inspect plant health regularly and act on pests, diseases or irrigation problems
• Design, install and maintain irrigation systems; where none exist, manually water trees and shrubs
• Coordinate seasonal plantings and garden enhancements with the Works Manager
• Work with the Building Maintenance Officer on larger landscaping projects and advise on plant selection and procurement
• Operate and maintain gardening equipment, and clean and maintain tools
• Provide input on plant selection and help the general hand staff with gardening tasks
• Support cleaning of Shire buildings and facilities only when the cleaner is absent and directed by the Works Manager

Required profile

• Previous experience in gardening, horticulture, landscaping or a similar role is preferred
• Understanding of plant care, irrigation and horticultural practices
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Current driver's licence and valid Australian work rights
