Engineering Manager, Direct-to-Consumer

About the role

Cover Genius is the global infrastructure for embedded protection, serving customers of major digital companies such as Klarna, Revolut, Stripe, Uber and Booking.com. As an Engineering Manager in its Technology Team, you will lead a team of 5-6 engineers building and operating the software behind the direct-to-consumer brands RentalCover.com and TravelCover.com. The role sits at the intersection of technology, product, data and marketing, with a hands-on element: you will manage delivery and also contribute code on the PHP/Laravel and TypeScript/React stack.

Key responsibilities

• Own technical execution and delivery for all applications across the direct-to-consumer domain, meeting business, performance and security requirements.
• Deliver the technical capability behind user acquisition, conversion, retention and revenue growth, from roadmap to measurable outcomes.
• Drive technical excellence through engineering best practices, quality standards and sound architecture, backed by metrics.
• Build a team culture of innovation, continuous learning and collaborative problem solving.
• Partner with Product, Marketing, Infrastructure and Data & AI teams across timezones.
• Identify and integrate emerging technologies, including AI tooling, to improve productivity, quality and velocity.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or Engineering.
• At least 7 years of software engineering experience and at least 3 years in engineering leadership roles.
• Experience designing and operating production systems, mentoring engineers and building teams.
• Fluent with AI coding tools (e.g. Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini) and a working understanding of LLMs beyond code generation.
• Hybrid work: home on Wednesday and Thursday, office on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, with flexible start and finish times.

Required skills

• Backend and frontend expertise, ideally PHP/Laravel, React and TypeScript, with high-quality APIs and services.
• Software architecture, API development and monitoring and observability for distributed systems.
• Growth engineering stack: technical SEO, ad tracking and analytics integrations (Google Ads, GA), site performance optimisation.
• CI/CD pipelines, test automation and code quality tools; familiarity with infrastructure-as-code, AWS/GCP and Kubernetes is highly desirable.
