Engineer – Dams & Hydropower

About the role

Join SMEC’s leading Dams & Hydropower team in Melbourne or Hobart and work on a diverse portfolio of dam and renewable energy projects. This role is open to graduates and experienced engineers looking to develop their expertise in dam design, safety and project delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Support the planning, analysis and design of dams and hydropower schemes.
• Prepare engineering assessments, calculations, reports and technical documentation.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to deliver high‑quality outcomes.
• Assist with dam safety assessments, inspections and risk reviews.
• Coordinate project activities and maintain effective communication with stakeholders.
• Build strong relationships with clients, contractors and internal teams.
• Contribute to solving complex engineering challenges across the project lifecycle.

Required profile

• Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
• Interest in dams, hydropower, civil or geotechnical engineering.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Willingness to learn and develop in a collaborative environment.
• For senior candidates: experience delivering dam or major infrastructure projects, knowledge of Australian dam standards, and client‑facing experience.
