Designer – Roads & Highways

About the role

SMEC is seeking a motivated Designer – Roads & Highways to join its team in Brisbane, Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast. You will support the delivery of transport infrastructure projects across Australia, working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver high‑quality road and highway design outputs in line with Austroads, client specifications and SMEC quality standards.
• Prepare drawings, models and technical documentation using 12d and AutoCAD as primary design tools.
• Provide inputs to design reports, conduct peer reviews and ensure compliance with HSEQ requirements.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate timely and accurate project delivery.
• Support senior engineers in developing practical, cost‑effective solutions and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• 3–6 years’ experience in roads and highways design within a consulting or infrastructure environment.
• Proficiency in 12d as the primary design software; familiarity with Civil 3D or OpenRoads is beneficial.
• Strong knowledge of Austroads and relevant local authority standards.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
• Proactive, solutions‑focused mindset with a commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
