Design Manager / Technical Director – Maritime

About the role

GHD is seeking an experienced Design Manager or Technical Director to lead multidisciplinary maritime projects for its Queensland Maritime team. The role is based in Brisbane but may consider candidates from other Queensland offices.

Key responsibilities

• Lead planning, assessment, design and delivery of maritime infrastructure such as wharves, jetties, ferry terminals, ports, marinas, pontoons and seawalls.
• Manage design teams of engineers, scientists and drafters, ensuring high‑quality outcomes across project lifecycles.
• Oversee project scope, quality, schedule, budget, risk and design interfaces.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with other disciplines on complex projects.
• Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients and stakeholders.
• Prepare proposals, pursue new opportunities and support growth of the maritime team.
• Coach and mentor developing engineers and contribute to a strong team culture.

Required profile

• Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• 10+ years experience in assessment, analysis, design and remediation of maritime structures.
• Proven experience leading design and delivery of maritime infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrated capability in design management, stakeholder management and project delivery.
• Chartered status (or working toward chartership) and RPEQ registration, or ability to obtain it.
• Eligibility for Australian Defence Security Clearance is favourable but not mandatory.

Required skills

• Familiarity with Australian and international maritime design standards and guidelines.
• Strong commercial judgement and problem‑solving abilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
