About the role
Karlka Recruiting Group has partnered with a Federal Government Agency to engage a Database Designer. The role is based in Melbourne CBD, Brisbane CBD or Wollongong CBD for an initial contract from 30/11/2026 to 28/11/2027, with a possible 12-month extension. The Database Designer designs, delivers, maintains and optimises enterprise PostgreSQL databases in AWS environments, covering design, build, deployment, performance optimisation and ongoing maintenance.
Key responsibilities
- Design and implement PostgreSQL database schemas, indexes and related database artefacts
- Develop and optimise PostgreSQL queries, functions and triggers to maximise performance and data integrity
- Collaborate with software engineering teams to integrate database solutions with applications, APIs and microservices
- Monitor database performance and implement optimisation strategies to improve scalability and reliability
- Establish and maintain backup, recovery and disaster management protocols
- Work with DevOps teams on deployment pipelines, migration strategies and infrastructure-as-code practices
- Conduct code reviews and provide technical mentorship to team members
- Research and evaluate PostgreSQL features, extensions and optimisation techniques
Required profile
- NV1 security clearance (must hold); two professional reference checks required
- Australian citizenship required
- Extensive experience with AWS RDS Aurora
- Experience integrating database solutions with AWS application architectures
- Experience implementing backup, recovery and disaster management protocols
- Experience working with DevOps teams on deployment pipelines and database migrations
Required skills
- PostgreSQL database design, development and optimisation
- Strong analytical and communication skills
- Understanding of change management principles
