Communications Technician - Underground Mining (14/14 FIFO)

About the role

Barminco, part of the Perenti Group, is looking for an experienced Communications Technician to join its team on a full-time, permanent position on a 14/14 FIFO roster. The role is central to delivering safe, productive and efficient underground mining operations on a long-term underground gold project.

Key responsibilities

• Install, commission and maintain underground communications infrastructure including digital radio systems, fibre optic networks, leaky feeder systems, Wi-Fi mesh and BLE technologies.
• Support the deployment, integration and fault-finding of mining technology platforms such as fleet management, proximity detection, tele-remote operations and environmental monitoring.
• Maintain tele-remote mining systems so that underground mobile equipment communicates securely and with low latency with surface control facilities.
• Install, test and troubleshoot underground IoT devices, smart sensors and telemetry equipment.
• Work with operations, electrical engineering and IT/OT teams on edge computing devices, industrial gateways and network infrastructure.
• Monitor and optimise communications and IoT network performance to support autonomous operations and real-time data streaming.
• Provide technical leadership, guidance and mentorship to support the design, deployment and optimisation of technology solutions.

Required profile

• Certificate III or IV in Telecommunications, Electronics, Information Technology or a closely related field, or equivalent industry experience.
• Demonstrated experience in a communications or technology support role in mining, resources or heavy industry, ideally underground.
• Experience installing, commissioning and maintaining fibre optics, leaky feeder networks, digital radios and wireless technologies (Wi-Fi mesh, LTE, BLE, LPWA).
• Open Cabling Registration (ACMA-compliant) with endorsements in Fibre Optic Cabling, Structured Cabling and Coaxial Cabling.
• Working at Heights and Confined Space Entry certification, or willingness to obtain them.
• Valid manual driver's licence.
