Communications Specialist

About the role

The Communications Specialist will shape AWA’s public voice and influence across the Australian water sector, working on corporate communications, media, PR, advocacy and issues management. You will translate complex technical and policy information into compelling narratives that engage and influence diverse audiences.

Key responsibilities

• Develop compelling narratives and key messages supporting organisational, advocacy, media and campaign objectives.
• Translate complex technical, policy and organisational information into clear, accurate communications for diverse audiences.
• Write, edit and refine high‑quality content including media releases, statements, corporate communications and campaign messaging.
• Identify proactive media and PR opportunities, coordinate media activity, monitor coverage and manage enquiries.
• Provide communications advice on positioning, messaging and stakeholder communications.
• Develop communications plans, coordinate stakeholder input and manage external suppliers.

Required profile

• Exceptional writing, editing and storytelling ability with a talent for finding and shaping stories.
• Strong judgement and practical PR experience, including media release writing and coordinating media activity.
• Experience working in an issues‑rich environment with sensitive messaging and competing stakeholder interests.
• Excellent verbal communication skills and confidence engaging senior stakeholders.
• Collaborative, adaptable and hands‑on approach with the ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
