Civil Works Superintendent

About the role

Cook Shire Council is looking for a hands-on civil works leader to run its road, drainage and civil works program across one of Queensland's largest and most remote shires. The role splits time between the field, where works are overseen on site, and the office, where the program is planned, costed and reported. It leads the Civil Works and Bridge Foremen, manages contractors and looks after the budget for capital and maintenance works.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee the delivery of road, drainage, civil construction and maintenance works across the Shire.
• Lead, support and develop Foremen, field crews and relevant Council staff.
• Plan, schedule and cost capital and maintenance works programs.
• Supervise contractors and ensure works meet quality, safety and specification requirements.
• Inspect roads and drainage infrastructure, identify defects and prioritise repairs.
• Coordinate wet season and emergency response works to restore access and essential services.
• Liaise with Council staff, contractors, government agencies, landholders and the community.

Required profile

• Extensive hands-on experience building and maintaining sealed and unsealed roads, drainage and concrete structures.
• Proven record of leading field crews and making sound decisions on site.
• Current Queensland driver's licence and a Construction White Card.

Required skills

• Planning, estimating and costing works, and managing budgets.
• Managing contractors and evaluating tenders and quotes.

• Permanent full-time position with pay under the Queensland Local Government Industry Award (Level 6.1-6.3, depending on qualifications and experience).
