Civil Construction Apprentice - Plant Operations

About the role

Mildura Rural City Council, together with SMGT, is offering a Certificate III in Civil Construction (Plant Operations) apprenticeship. The trainee learns on the job and at trade school within the Works and Infrastructure field, earning above-apprentice wages with a chance of moving into a permanent full-time position after completion. The position is paid under the Council's Enterprise Agreement and Local Government (Long Service Leave) Regulations 2021.

Key responsibilities

• Complete on-the-job and trade-school training to obtain the Certificate III qualification.
• Carry out construction and maintenance of sealed and unsealed roads, drainage, footpaths, kerbs and channels and associated infrastructure.
• Learn to operate plant and equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoes and skid steers, and maintain resources safely and efficiently.
• Read and interpret civil construction plans and use a laser for laying pipes and taking levels.
• Perform general labouring duties: pipeline, stormwater, water and sewer construction, demolition and recycling, manual excavation, use of hand and power tools, and erecting barricades and warning signs.
• Learn basic machine checks and maintenance, and prepare for both plant and non-plant civil operations.

Required profile

• Victorian P1 car driver's licence for 12 months or interstate equivalent, with willingness to obtain a heavy rigid truck licence.
• Genuine interest in civil works and a mechanically minded approach.
• Commitment to complete all training, attend trade school during designated hours and work shifts or extra hours as required.
• Team player, able to follow direction and show initiative; basic knowledge of civil construction, plant and equipment, and OH&S practices.
• Current satisfactory police check or willingness to obtain one, right to work in Australia, and possibly a Working with Children Check.
