Casual Deckhand – Ferry to Tiwi Islands

About the role

Island Connections Northern Territory, part of Journey Beyond, runs up to 14 daily return services to Mandorah and four times a week to the Tiwi Islands on high-speed catamarans. It is looking for a casual Deckhand to join the team and help deliver safe, smooth and memorable journeys for guests. The role is on-site and combines vessel operations with guest service.

Key responsibilities

• Welcome guests, assist with luggage and enquiries, and keep everyone informed about service updates
• Sell ferry tickets, beverages and onboard products, including upselling and cross-selling
• Handle lines, position and secure gangways and ramps under the Vessel Master's direction
• Inspect ropes and deck equipment and report defects or damage
• Keep the vessel, pontoons and crew areas clean and organised
• Maintain onboard stock, rotate products, complete requisitions and stocktakes
• Handle cash, tickets and freight accurately and securely
• Complete logs, checklists, timesheets and operational paperwork
• Support emergency procedures and uphold maritime and workplace safety requirements

Required profile

• Dependable, proactive team player who communicates confidently and stays calm when busy
• Full working rights in Australia
• Physical capacity to stand for long periods and safely lift, move and store stock up to 20 kg
• Sound knowledge of the region, vessels and rope handling
• 1+ years of customer service and cash-handling experience
• A minimum of 6 months' sea time (highly regarded)

Required skills

• Ochre card (Working with Children Check) or interim statutory declaration and police clearance
• First aid and CPR (highly regarded)
• Basic computer skills and experience with product rotation and stock control
