Career Medical Officer - Psychiatry, Mental Health Emergency Department

About the role

The Department of Health Tasmania is seeking a Career Medical Officer (CMO) in psychiatry for its Mental Health Emergency Department at the Royal Hobart Hospital. The position provides psychiatric assessment, management and clinical care for people presenting with acute mental health concerns, in a specialist mental health emergency service. It is a permanent full-time day-worker position (with on-call) of 76 hours per fortnight, starting as soon as possible.

Key responsibilities

• Provide medical care to patients in inpatient mental health units, including the Short Stay Unit
• Attend to mental health patients throughout the hospital who need specialist medical input
• Liaise with consultant psychiatrists on patient assessment and management
• Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation, including admissions, progress notes, decisions and discharge summaries
• Respond promptly to clinical calls from registered nurses and other clinical staff
• Perform clinical procedures within scope of practice and prescribe accurately
• Take part in discharge planning and continuity of care
• Comply with professional, ethical and legal obligations, including the Tasmanian Mental Health Act

Required profile

• General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia
• Current Working with Children Registration where applicable
• Confidence in assessing and managing psychiatric emergencies and making sound clinical decisions

What we offer

• Salary of $132,613 to $188,840 per annum (pro rata) plus 12% superannuation and salary packaging
