Assistant Parliamentary Counsel (APC 3)

About the role

The Assistant Parliamentary Counsel provides legislative drafting support while developing the expertise needed to deliver independent drafting services and eventually lead project teams. This position offers on‑the‑job training and formal courses to build a career in government legislation.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Senior Executive Service team leader in drafting legislation and managing project logistics.
• Maintain effective relationships with drafting team members, instructors, OPC staff, and relevant government and parliamentary bodies.
• Participate in product development initiatives such as plain‑English drafting and IT support for legislative processes.
• Contribute to office committees, reviews, and present Legislation Process Course material when required.

Required profile

• Highly developed analytical and problem‑solving abilities for legislative drafting.
• Excellent written communication with strong command of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
• Strong oral communication, empathy, and conflict‑resolution skills to sustain collaborative working relationships.
• Sound judgment for handling complex drafting decisions.
• Organisational skills to meet deadlines, manage workload, and support project leadership.
• Substantial experience in drafting legislation or providing legal advice related to Commonwealth law.
