Advanced Paediatric Trainee – Neonatal Intensive Care

About the role

The Advanced Paediatric Trainee position offers a 12‑month, full‑time placement within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of John Hunter Children’s Hospital. You will work in a state‑of‑the‑art, 44‑bed tertiary NICU, providing comprehensive care to newborns across the Hunter New England and Mid North Coast regions.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver inpatient and outpatient paediatric care under the supervision of senior specialists and fellows.
• Conduct initial assessments, order and interpret investigations, and manage ongoing treatment plans.
• Coordinate timely discharges, arrange follow‑up care, and ensure continuity of care for families.
• Supervise and teach junior medical staff and medical students, modelling professional conduct and communication.
• Participate in on‑call duties, handovers, and rostered overtime as required by the service.

Required profile

• Minimum six months experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care setting.
• MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
• Commitment to a 12‑month training placement and compliance with network training requirements.
• Ability to work 12‑hour shifts and adapt to the demands of a busy tertiary NICU.
