Aboriginal Men's Cancer Support Officer
Broome Regional Aboriginal Medical Services · Broome
Job description
About the role
Funded under the Cancer Australia 2026 Supporting People with Cancer grant, this role delivers the Engaging Older Aboriginal Men project, providing culturally safe, relationship-based support to Aboriginal men living with cancer in Broome and the wider Kimberley so that men stay engaged in their care. Working with the BRAMS Cancer Support Team, the officer uses proactive outreach, flexible appointment models and practical support to strengthen continuity between hospital-based cancer services and community primary care, focusing on men who are disengaged or face complex social needs.
Key responsibilities

- Identify and engage men disengaged from or underserved by mainstream cancer services, including those geographically isolated or with complex psychosocial needs.
- Help men stay engaged across screening, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and survivorship.
- Carry out proactive outreach, including home visits and informal appointments outside clinics.
- Coordinate transport, accommodation and logistics for appointments, including travel between the Kimberley and treatment centres.
- Provide practical support between appointments, such as medication and food access and connections to wraparound supports.
- Deliver culturally appropriate cancer education to men, families and carers.
- Liaise between men, families, clinicians and external providers to strengthen continuity of care.
- Complete documentation and reporting in line with organisational and grant requirements, including data for Cancer Australia.
Required profile
- A male Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person; this is a genuine occupational requirement under the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA).
- Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities, with an understanding of men's health and men's business.
- Ability to engage men who are disengaged or mistrustful of mainstream services through relationship-based approaches.
- Current Australian driver's licence or ability to obtain one, and ability to get a National Police Check and a Working with Children Check.
- Desirable: experience in a health, community support or patient liaison role; knowledge of cancer care pathways; certificate or qualification in Aboriginal Health Work, Community Services or nursing.
What we offer
- Salary of $80,000 - $90,000 plus superannuation.
- Relocation assistance of up to $5,000; salary packaging up to $15,900 plus meal and entertainment benefits.
- $1,300 remote area allowance, 6 weeks annual leave with 17.5% loading, and free GP, dental and allied health services for you and your family.
