Technical Principal – Engineering Geology

About the role

We are looking for a Technical Principal specialising in Engineering Geology to join our Melbourne team. The successful candidate will lead technical risk governance, drive innovation and uphold the highest standards of project delivery across our infrastructure portfolio.

Key responsibilities

• Enhance SMEC’s reputation as a leading consultant through technical excellence and innovative solutions.
• Provide technical risk and opportunity governance for proposals and ongoing projects, acting as Proposal/Project Director when required.
• Lead and mentor technical staff, ensuring optimal performance, resource allocation, retention and professional development.
• Drive business growth by managing client relationships, pursuing new opportunities and supporting business development activities.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent.
• Membership with Engineers Australia; Chartered (CPEng) and/or RPEQ certification.
• 20+ years of experience in engineering geology or a closely related discipline.
• Proven track record in quality assurance, technical review and delivering client‑focused outcomes.
• Strong commercial acumen, including budgeting, business planning and cost‑efficiency delivery.
