Staff Software Engineer - Android Mobile

About the role

CommBank is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to provide hands-on technical leadership on Android experiences within the CommBank app. The role shapes the mobile platform architecture and roadmap, improves engineering practices and guides key technical decisions that support secure, reliable and maintainable customer experiences. It sits in a Sydney-based squad within Retail Technology, which covers technology and operations across CommBank and Bankwest Retail.

Key responsibilities

• Shape Android architecture, technical direction and the engineering roadmap
• Design and build high-quality experiences within the CommBank app
• Lead critical design decisions and promote pragmatic, scalable solutions
• Influence engineering practices across the squad and broader value stream
• Own solutions end-to-end, from design and development through to production operation
• Mentor engineers and share knowledge
• Improve quality through automated testing, continuous delivery and production observability
• Collaborate across mobile and backend systems

Required profile

• Experienced Android engineer who can influence architecture, practices and delivery outcomes
• Ownership, clear communication of technical decisions and a focus on customers and quality
• Experience mentoring engineers and improving technical capability
• Ability to lead technical decisions and build support for strategic engineering direction

Required skills

• Deep Android development with Kotlin, the Android SDK and Jetpack Compose
• Mobile architecture: MVVM, MVI, Clean Architecture and modular design
• Dependency injection, object-oriented design, SOLID principles and design patterns
• Automated testing, continuous delivery and production observability
• REST or GraphQL APIs and cloud services such as AWS
• Exposure to iOS, Swift.NET, C#, microservices, AI/ML, Agentic AI or regulated environments is beneficial
