Software Engineer – Junior/Mid-level

About the role

Countersight is looking for a junior to mid‑level Software Engineer to join its Canberra team. You will work on full‑stack projects, from embedded systems to web and mobile applications, with a strong focus on security‑by‑design.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain bespoke software using modern frontend and backend technologies.
• Design secure, maintainable and scalable solutions.
• Perform root‑cause analysis across the stack – from code to kernel, network and hardware.
• Work with AI tools and develop AI‑focused tooling.
• Integrate and deploy software in diverse enterprise environments and support clients.
• Participate in code reviews, contribute to engineering best practices and document systems.

Required profile

• Comfortable with wide latitude and self‑directed problem solving.
• Willing to admit gaps and research solutions.
• Able to explain technical concepts to non‑technical audiences.
• Pragmatic about delivering quality while balancing deadlines.

Required skills

• Proficiency in at least one backend language and one frontend language.
• Git version control and pull‑request workflow.
• Experience with CI/CD systems (e.g., GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Buildkite).
• Database knowledge (PostgreSQL, SQLite, MongoDB).
• Networking fundamentals – IP addressing, DNS, TLS, OSI model.
• Security fundamentals and Linux basics.
• Familiarity with embedded technologies is a plus.
