Senior Risk & Compliance Business Partner - Investment Management

About the role

A growing investment management function in Sydney is looking for an experienced investment professional in compliance and risk management, performance, product, investment solutions or financial markets to join as a Senior Risk & Compliance Business Partner. Working within Line 1 and partnering closely with Investment Management teams, the role strengthens how risk and compliance are embedded across the investment lifecycle. It is not just a governance or oversight role: you work directly with investment stakeholders to understand their operations, identify and assess risk, strengthen controls and processes and embed practical risk and compliance disciplines into day-to-day investment activities.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with Investment Management stakeholders to strengthen Line 1 risk and compliance practices across the investment lifecycle.
• Build trusted relationships with investment professionals, giving practical advice and constructive challenge on risk, controls and compliance matters.
• Support the development and implementation of risk and compliance frameworks within the investment function.
• Identify and assess operational and compliance risks and work with stakeholders to strengthen the controls that manage them.
• Lead and support risk assessments, controls assurance, incident and issue management, obligations management and compliance activities.
• Identify gaps, emerging risks and opportunities to improve investment processes and controls.
• Promote strong risk ownership and embed risk management into daily investment decisions.
• Partner with second-line Risk & Compliance and broader governance stakeholders, and contribute to initiatives that strengthen risk capability, governance and risk culture.
• Assist with APRA oversight activities, including key deliverables, reporting deadlines and scope of work.

Required profile

• Strong understanding of investment management or the broader investment ecosystem, with the confidence to influence experienced investment professionals.
• No need for a traditional operational risk career path; candidates from investment risk and compliance, investment operations, custody, fund administration, securities, trading, investment risk and analytics, investment solutions or investment/product environments are welcome.
• Understanding of how investments move through the lifecycle and how investment teams interact with operations, custodians, administrators, external managers and other service providers.
• Excellent stakeholder management skills and the ability to build credibility as a trusted business partner.
• Pragmatic and commercial approach to risk and compliance, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Required skills

• Knowledge of the investment management lifecycle and institutional investment environments.
• Experience partnering with investment professionals and/or complex investment operations.
• Understanding of risk, controls, governance and compliance in a regulated financial services environment.
• Analytical and problem-solving capability, with a pragmatic approach to risk and compliance.
