Senior Human Resources Officer

About the role

The Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers is seeking a motivated Senior Human Resources Officer to join its HR Operations team. You will provide expert HR advice, manage the operations inbox, mentor staff, and turn workforce data into actionable insights that support the department’s strategic goals.

Key responsibilities

• Provide timely, accurate advice on HR policies, procedures and industrial instruments.
• Manage the HR Operations inbox, ensuring enquiries are resolved or escalated appropriately.
• Analyse workforce data to identify trends, risks and opportunities, and prepare management reports.
• Collaborate with HR leaders to develop training strategies and improve processes.
• Mentor and coach HR Officers to support their professional growth.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Prepare high‑quality correspondence, briefing notes, submissions and reports on HR operational matters.

Required profile

• Strong understanding of contemporary HR practices and workplace legislation.
• Proven experience delivering HR advice and interpreting industrial instruments.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to analyse data, identify trends and provide actionable insights.
• Experience mentoring or coaching team members.
• High‑level proficiency in HR systems, data analysis tools and Microsoft Office.
• Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment while balancing competing priorities.
