Senior Environmental Planner

About the role

SMEC is seeking a Senior Environmental Planner to join its high‑performing Queensland environmental team. You will work on a diverse portfolio of projects ranging from renewables and utilities to major infrastructure such as the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, dams, and rail.

Key responsibilities

• Develop environmental impact assessments, approval applications and related studies.
• Provide expert advice on environmental and planning matters within multidisciplinary project teams.
• Design technical solutions to improve environmental and sustainability outcomes.
• Contribute to proposals and bids for new and ongoing work.
• Apply Commonwealth, State and Local legislation, policies and guidelines.
• Produce high‑quality reports and deliverables.
• Carry out desk‑based and field‑based technical work.
• Develop and oversee post‑approval environmental management plans.
• Deliver environmental monitoring programs and provide ongoing advice.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Planning or a related discipline.
• Minimum 6 + years’ experience in a similar role.
• Proven experience obtaining environmental and statutory approvals for Queensland projects.
• Consultancy experience preferred.
• Demonstrated project and client relationship management capability.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong report‑writing ability.
• Experience working with government clients is an advantage.
