You will work with closure planners, landform designers and geomorphologists on projects across Queensland, New South Wales and nationally, applying water engineering skills to how mine sites drain, flood, erode and behave as landforms after operations end.
Key responsibilities
- Lead surface water and flood assessments for operating and closing mine sites, including catchment hydrology, hydraulic (flood) modelling, flood immunity and levee assessments.
- Design closure drainage and water management infrastructure such as diversion drains, spillways, rock chutes, sediment basins and post-mining drainage networks.
- Contribute to creek diversion and waterway rehabilitation design, including channel form, stability, erosion and scour protection and riparian rehabilitation.
- Contribute to natural landform design and provide hydrology and hydraulics inputs for stable, natural drainage-based final landforms.
- Contribute to soils and erosion assessments, including soil and spoil characterisation, sodic and dispersive material management, erosion modelling (e.g. RUSLE / WEPP), topsoil and growth medium balances, cover design inputs and erosion and sediment control (ESC) plans.
- Undertake site water balance and final void / pit lake assessments to inform water management plans and closure outcomes.
- Prepare and contribute to mine closure plans, Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure Plans (PRCPs), water management plans and other regulatory documentation.
- Contribute to closure designs and cost estimates, including quantities and costing for civil and earthworks.
- Collaborate with the national group of closure practitioners, deliver projects and proposals, undertake site visits and field inspections, and mentor junior engineers.
Required profile
- Ideally 7+ years of civil or environmental engineering experience in consulting; resources sector experience is highly regarded.
- Tertiary degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or equivalent.
- RPEQ registration, or eligibility to obtain it in the short term.
- Experience designing drainage, flood mitigation, erosion and sediment control or water management infrastructure, including drawings, specifications and quantities.
- Experience in mine closure, rehabilitation, natural landform design, creek diversions or waterway assessment is highly regarded.
- Working knowledge of soils and erosion processes, and familiarity with ESC planning and design, is highly regarded; CPESC or RSP-ESC accreditation or progress towards it is well regarded.
- Demonstrated commercial acumen, project management experience across all life stages, and willingness to travel to regional and remote sites.
Required skills
- Hydrologic and hydraulic modelling (e.g. TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, RORB / URBS / XP-RAFTS, DRAINS) and working knowledge of ARR 2019.
- Familiarity with 12d Model, GIS, Deswik, flood modelling software and GoldSim is desirable.
What we offer
- Flexible working arrangements, including remote options and full-time or part-time hours.
- Purchased additional annual leave and competitive remuneration.
- Learning and development framework with training and conference allowances.
- Novated lease, paid carer leave, employee assistance program and mentoring.
- Opportunities to work on special interest projects across government, private and resource sectors, and to travel for work.
