Senior DevOps Engineer (Azure DevOps) - 4 Week Contract

About the role

A long-established Australian business is setting up its Azure DevOps capability from scratch and needs an experienced engineer to design and build a secure foundation, with security built in from day one. This is a 4-week initial contract with immediate start, focused on greenfield work with no legacy to untangle.

Key responsibilities

• Design and stand up the Azure DevOps organisation, projects, repositories and branching strategy
• Build CI/CD pipelines in YAML with reusable templates and sensible release gates
• Establish Infrastructure as Code patterns for repeatable, secure deployments
• Set up identity and access from the start: Entra ID, RBAC, service connections and least privilege
• Implement secrets management, security scanning and policy guardrails in the pipeline
• Configure baseline security monitoring and alerting across the Azure environment
• Document the platform and hand it over cleanly so the team can own it

Required profile

• Proven experience building Azure DevOps environments from the ground up, not just maintaining them
• Strong SecOps background in Azure, including Defender for Cloud, Sentinel, Key Vault and Azure Policy
• Hands-on Infrastructure as Code skills (Bicep, ARM or Terraform)
• Experience integrating security tooling into pipelines (SAST, dependency scanning, secret detection)
• Confidence making design decisions and explaining the reasoning to a non-specialist audience
• Track record of delivering in short, outcome-focused contracts
