Search Engineer

About the role

Join Xero's Search team as a Search Engineer and help maintain and evolve one of the largest search clusters in the Southern Hemisphere. You will work on infrastructure that serves over 200,000 daily active users, handling more than 50 million searchable documents and 400 TB of data with 99.9% uptime.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to a four‑year search platform modernisation project (Horizon 2 platform rebuild).
• Maintain and evolve search infrastructure to ensure 99.9% uptime at massive scale.
• Integrate the Operational Data Layer ingestion pipeline with the new platform.
• Collaborate on integrations with Mobile, Files, and AI‑adjacent search capabilities.

Required profile

• Experience building or maintaining search systems and a desire to deepen expertise in search engineering.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and ability to write clean, maintainable code.
• Growth mindset, eager to learn from senior engineers and tackle increasingly complex problems.
• Effective collaboration skills in a distributed environment.
• Initiative and ownership, taking tasks with enthusiasm and asking questions when needed.
