Project Finance Controller - BESS Projects

About the role

A fast-growing developer, owner-operator and investor in grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) across the National Electricity Market (NEM) is seeking a Project Finance Controller for its Australian BESS portfolio, held in ring-fenced SPVs. The role reports to the VP Finance, Overseas Business, and covers project-level financial control from development through construction, commissioning and long-term operations, plus new investment opportunity analysis. It is based in Sydney or Melbourne on a hybrid basis.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse new investment opportunities, take part in bidding and conduct financial due diligence
• Prepare and present project performance packs to the investment committee, lenders and equity partners
• Build and maintain project financial models (DCF, CAPEX, OPEX, revenue, debt service, DSRA, distributions)
• Lead annual budget and quarterly reforecast cycles, track construction CAPEX against EPC milestones and monitor OPEX
• Oversee credit terms and bad debt risks, helping sales recover accounts receivable
• Liaise with auditors, tax advisors, lenders and joint-venture partners, and support due diligence, tax structuring and refinancing work

Required profile

• Degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related discipline; CA / CPA / CPA preferred
• 6-10 years in project or corporate finance, preferably in infrastructure, energy or utilities, with 2-3 years in renewable energy or BESS
• Deep understanding of project finance structures
• Familiarity with NEM dynamics, FCAS markets, PPAs or energy trading is strongly preferred

Required skills

• Building and auditing financial models in Excel
• Working knowledge of ERP systems (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle) and project cost tools (Viewpoint, Procore)
